Fear in my belly.

Hello all,

Wow! I can't believe that in less than 48 hours, I will be on plane, hurdling through the moon-lit sky towards Barcelona, Spain.  I am scared out of my mind.  I can't even being to imagine what my life will be like for the next nine months.

I don't know how long this blog will last, but, if I am looking at my year abroad as a pregnancy, (36 weeks), then I should be posting until at least the end of the first trimester.

I will be living in San Fernando, a small town just outside of the beautiful beach city, Cadiz, in Spain. My family seems pretty nice, but very different than anyone here in Tiburon or Mill Valley. Fina is the matriarch of my host family and Rafael is her husband, (but no Dr. Joe).  They have two children, Jose Manuel is 22 and Nazaret, 24, and her son, Manuel, who is 2.

Well, this is a pretty boring post, and I guess I am just stalling so I don't have to start the long and terrible process of packing.  Thanks for reading, and the next time this blog is updated, I will be in SPAIN!

Here is a lovely photo of my host family

Violet, we are so proud of you. Very few people can, virtually on their own, move to the other side of the planet, live with strangers, speak a language that thus far has been an amusing form of communicating with Hermalinda and ordering lunch, shake up their extremely comfortable lives, and do what you're doing.
You are amazing!

Hi Violet,

This is Yeva writing to you. I spent my junior year in college in Brazil. The main thing I have to tell you is that no matter how scary or awful it is in the first week or so, don't worry, it will get better and better. I remember having such a headache from not being able to speak English or express myself. The great thing is that you have a two year old in the house, you can learn right along with the baby and they'll repeat a lot of words (I lived with a 2 yr old in Brazil and they used to tease me that I was a baby too). This blog thing is such a great idea. I can't belive how quickly you are growing up, because you may not remember it, but I've known you since you were a tiny baby and you were the most beautiful baby in the world! Love, Yeva
P.s. I never wrote on one of these blog things before, so I hope it comes to you

Violetta, fear not for the Lord is with you. The Lord will always be with you...except for a 30 minute, duty-free lunch, for which you will totally be on your own.

When I was 19 I went to Israel and without parental supervision, I went and got of all crazy things, a nose-ring! I mean who's ever heard of that? Oh, wait....

You're already miles ahead. You have the maturity and smarts to be just fine. Emma and I love you and know you will be okay.

Violet...I just got a facebook invite from your Mom. I had no idea you were spending this year abroad in Spain. I decided to go to your blog, and WOW....you are already there.

It will be great to read your blogs
(which I am sure will be in Spanish in the near future), and see the difference and growth you have attained after you are adjusted there, familiar, made new friends, and finally read you want to stay!

I lived in Germany, when I was married to Wolfgang, and Monika was only 20 months. He came back to America, leaving me (age 30) in Frankfurt with Monika and his family (most did not speak English.
I was only there for 4 months, but I am still fluent in German (can't really read or write) and Monika (now age 36) is fluent.

You will learn sooo much, and be so
appreciative of this opportunity...
just tough through it the next few
weeks. You will be amazed how you
weeks will pass into months, and finally this experience will be a
memory. Cherish (and continue writing) you adventure.

All my best to you.
